POLICE BEAT: Thieves help themselves

The Smithers RCMP received a report of a break-in at the 5000 block of Neilson Rd, Smithers BC.

On March 17, 2012 at 7:00 a.m, the Smithers RCMP received a report of a break-in at the 5000 block of Neilson Rd, Smithers BC. A neighbour of the property noted the lights in the residence were on and the front door was open.

Police attended and determined the house had been broken into. The inside of the residence wasvandalized, all the windows were smashed and furnishings destroyed.

Several items were stolen, including eight fishing reels (including two antique wooden reels and a high end ABU Ambassedeur 10000 CDL 24 K gold reel, three knives including a unique knife with a handmade birch wood handle in a leather sheath, an X-large yellow down filled coat, a Crossman BB pistol style gun, three chain saws, Stihl, Hilti and McCulloch brands, a Swiss-made compass and a 3-m ABU Garcia steelhead rod.

The Smithers RCMP has a more complete list of the property, including serial numbers for several of the items. Information received suggests a group may be responsible.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crimestoppers or the RCMP.

The Smithers RCMP have noted a substantial increase in 911 calls.  Police are obligated to attend all 911 calls and ensure the well being of the caller.

These calls are often a result of children playing with a phone, “testing” the system, crank calls from pay phones or accidental default dialing from cell phones.

The Smithers RCMP would like to remind the public to use this system responsibly.
