Mar. 25
At approximately 1:30 a.m. the Smithers RCMP responded to an alarm at St. Joseph’s Elementary School. When police arrived they found three broken windows and shoeprints were located on one of the broken windows at the scene. A short time later, a 17-year-old intoxicated male was found at the corner of Hwy 16 and Columbia Avenue. When questioned about the vandalism, he admitted to being the cause — his footware also matched the prints at the scene. The youth was arrested and turned over to a parent, pending charges.
Also on Mar. 25, the RCMP received a report that a red Dodge Caravan had all its windows smashed out over night while it was parked on the 3900 block of Railway Avenue. The owner of the vehicle heard a noise around 1 a.m. but thought it was someone knocking over garbage cans. It is unknown was what used to break the windows. Two large planters in front of the Salt Boutique on Main Street were smashed sometime overnight on Mar. 25. The planters were valued at $1,000. Anyone with information is asked to contact the RCMP.
Mar. 27
At approximately 12:30 a.m. the RCMP noted the front door to the Health Kinection on 2nd Avenue was ajar, and inspection revealed that the front door was pried open. The suspects exited the building through a window. It looked as if all the drawers and cupboards were emptied and a cash box containing a small amount of money was taken. It was later recovered at the cash drop in the Walmart store in Terrace. The police are seeking any further information the public may have.
Mar. 30
The RCMP responded to an assist call from the Moricetown Fire Department for a fire at a residence on Russell Avenue in Moricetown. Everyone in the home escaped unharmed and the fire department managed to contain the blaze. The fire chief said that the fire was started in and was contained in the basement but there was smoke damage throughout the house. The cause of the fire is considered accidental and no criminal investigation is underway.
General
The RCMP are still cautioning the public about a spike in mischief in recent weeks, specifically with rocks being thrown through windows of cars and buildings. While the purpose is mainly to cause damage, items have occasionally been taken. If you see any suspicious activity or persons, contact the Smithers RCMP detachment or Crime Stoppers.
