The province has signed a $13.35 million benefit agreement with the Kitselas First Nation to ensure that the first nation benefits from Pacific Northwest LNG.

The $11.4 billion Pacific NorthWest LNG export terminal on Lelu Island was the first to be greenlit by Ottawa in September of last year. However, the Pacific Northwest facility is still waiting a final investment decision.

The benefit agreement comes in three stages.

Upon signing, the Kitselas will receive $1.35 million split between community hall planning, an initial Pacific Northwest LNG and LNG Canada legacy fund payment, initial legacy and capacity funding for other LNG projects and Kitimat LNG initial legacy and capacity funding, linked only to the progress of the Kitimat LNG project. The nation will also receive the 25-hectare Airport Groundside parcel.

When the final investment decision is made, the Kitselas will get $1 million in a Pacific Northwest LNG and LNG Canada legacy fund payment and $2 million for   community hall funding.

The Kitselas will get the rest of the $13.35 once construction begins.

More to come.
