Sharon Hartwell will not be standing as candidate for the Liberals in the upcoming federal election.
It wasn’t an easy choice for the former Telkwa mayor, who has spent two years considering the task.
“I did pursue it for some time and it looked like it would be an opportunity,” she said.
Not going into too many details, she said running in the race didn’t fit into what plans she currently had for her life.
“I felt that I had to re-examine [my] priorities and probably pursue it at a different time but not through this election process.”
That leaves the possibility she’ll put her name in the next time an election is called.
“When the time is right, the time is right. For me I don’t think the time was right,” she said. “I don’t want to get elected just to get elected.”
Hartwell is currently a director on the Northern Health Authority board and the area planning committee.
During her time as mayor of Telkwa, she also sat on the board of the North West Regional Hospital District, including a stint as chair. The district taxes northwest residents in return for providing money for health-related expenses in the region.
She did run for provincial office once and that was for the now-defunct Progressive Democratic Alliance.
