On Friday afternoon at approximately 2:30 p.m. the New Hazelton RCMP were called to the scene of an accident 10 minutes west of New Hazelton on Highway 16 where it was reported that there was a collision involving a Greyhound bus and a commercial transport truck.

Witnesses at the scene reported that the truck allegedly slowed down to pass a grader during a severe snow storm when the Greyhound bus collided with the back of the truck. The subsequent impact caused the bus to veer across the road and plow through a snow bank into the front yard of the place formerly known as the Homesteader. Fire and rescue crews were called to the scene and it took sometime before they were able to pry the door wide enough to unload the passengers.

All 11 passengers reported no major injuries although one female was taken to the hospital for closer examination.

The remaining passengers were transferred to an awaiting school bus that took them to the bus station in New Hazelton.

The RCMP are still investigating the accident but they stated in their press release that road and weather conditions were apparent factors.

It took several hours before the highway was returned to two lanes.
