UPDATE: Fire dept believes cause of fatal fire was electrical

Name of victim not being released at this time

Smithers Fire Rescue believes the cause of a fire on New Year’s Eve in the Hudson Bay Mobile Park that claimed the life of one person was electrical in nature.

RCMP Detachment Commander Terry Gillespie confirmed that one person died but the other resident of the home is physically okay. He added no further details about the deceased would be released.

However, A GoFundMe Page recently set up for the victims of the fire said Perry Burton, an employee of West Fraser Mill for 20 years died in the fire.

He leaves behind his wife Kim and two children Joey and Jennifer. The page also said Kim worked at the Smithers Tim Hortons for many years before health issues had caused her to stop working. Donations are also being accepted there. As of Saturday morning (Jan. 4) almost $4,000 has been raised through the GoFundMe page.

Fire Chief Keith Stecko said crews were called out at approximately 7:30 p.m. Around 20-25 firefighters fought the blaze. They also recovered the bodies of one cat and one dog.

They believe the cause of the fire was electrical in nature.
