A house on Princess Street is now gone after a fire ripped through the structure on Friday night. (June 9)

Fire crews from both Smithers and Telkwa were needed to battle the blaze from around 10 p.m. to 4:30 a.m.

Three apparatus and 14 fire fighters were on scene from Smithers Fire Rescue and one apparatus and five fire fighters came from the Telkwa Fire Department.

“We had a fully involved self venting fire when we arrived,” said Smithers Fire Rescue Acting Fire Chief Alle Jan de Vries. “We found a very heavy fuel load on arrival and deemed the structure was unsafe to enter.”

He said the fire was extinguished as much as possible last night (Friday) and this morning (Saturday) heavy equipment was brought in to overhaul and complete extinguishment.

This work is currently on going.
