UPDATE: Damage being assessed following blaze at Canadian Tire

The fire started at approximately 4:30 p.m., store evacuated, no injuries


Emergency responders on the scene of a fire at the Canadian Tire store in Smithers this afternoon (July 26) are still assessing the damage and checking for hotspots in the roof of the building.

The Interior News is now being told there were no injuries associated with the blaze, but photos indicate there is significant damage to the rear of the building.

The store was evacuated and when Fire Rescue responded the Garden Centre was fully engulfed.

There is no word as yet from Canadian Tire as to how long the store might be closed pending assessment of interior damage and smoke damage.


Smithers Fire Rescue with help from Telkwa Fire Rescue has a fire that started at Canadian Tire this afternoon basically under control. Police and ambulance also responded and are currently on scene.

The blaze started at around 4:30 p.m. and was effectively out by 5:15 p.m.

Police at the scene told Black Press Media the inside of the building was very smoky and the back part of the building may be compromised.

There is no indication of a cause so far.
