Erosion protection won’t proceed

The Regional District of Bulkley Nechako will not be proceeding with further work regarding erosion protection in the Ebenezer Flats and Kidd Road areas due to no interest from the affected residents.

The Regional District of Bulkley Nechako will not be proceeding with further work regarding erosion protection in the Ebenezer Flats and Kidd Road areas due to no interest from the affected residents.

Following the major flood in the region four years ago there was discussion about either setting up an armouring of the river bank or putting into place a dike in the area, to prevent subsequent floods from having the same amount of devastation.

“The directors of the day made a decision that all of us, and that includes the municipalities, would support a study to see what could be done to provide protection for that area,” RDBN Director and Smithers Mayor Cress Farrow said.

All the residents affected in the flood area were sent letters, Farrow said, but when it came down to it only 10 residents attended the meeting.

“There is a cost associated to providing that type of service and it would be a user pay system,” Farrow said. “For the residents living there, they would be responsible to be paying for the armouring of the riverbank and they weren’t prepared to invest their own funds to do this.”

As the residents weren’t interested in pursuing any actions, the RDBN unanimously voted to have further work by staff halted in view of the residents decision.
