A teenage boy was rescued by his neighbour from a blaze at this unit in Smithers last week.

A teenager was rescued from a burning unit by a brave neighbour who reportedly crawled into the building to save him.

Firefighters, police and two ambulances were called to the blaze at the Hudson Bay Trailer Court in Smithers at about 8:30 p.m. on Friday.

Initial reports suggested a person might have been inside but police were later told the two occupants, an adult woman and male youth, had been rescued by neighbours.

They had already escaped when the Smithers Fire Department arrived.

RCMP Corporal Kimberly Delwisch said officers at the scene heard a neighbour had bravely pulled the teen from the unit.

“I do know that the one neighbour who did attend ended up crawling into the trailer to pull the youth out,” she said.

The teen and the woman were transported by ambulance to the Bulkley Valley District Hospital suffering possible burns and smoke inhalation.

The woman has been released but the youth was flown to another hospital for further treatment.

Smithers Fire Department is still investigating the cause of the fire.
