Council offers $1500 reward in tree case

The Town of Smithers is offering a $1500 reward for any information leading to the arrest of vandals who destroyed a row of trees on town property.

The Town of Smithers is offering a $1500 reward for any information leading to the arrest of vandals who destroyed a row of trees on town property.

Vandals knocked down ten trees along the east side of Highway 16 from Main Street to Glacier Street.

No witnesses have come forward so far.

“It’s really a shame,” said Smithers mayor Cress Farrow.

The town has worked hard to build on its natural beauty, he said, and the destroyed trees were just beginning to look more mature.

While all councillors were disappointed at the loss,  councillor Wray questioned whether the $1500 reward was a good idea.

Wray said council should be consistent, and that it is unfair to offer a reward in this case but not in similar ones.

Other councillors responded by saying this was a case  where a line should be drawn.
