Paving of some streets in Smithers is set to start soon.

This year’s plan includes repaving sections of Third Avenue, Thirteenth Avenue, Fifteenth Avenue, Alfred Avenue, Manitoba Street, and Victoria Drive that have been subject to asphalt deterioration.

Also included is the paving of the lane between Alfred Avenue and Broadway Avenue as the building owner had provided cash-in-lieu for improvements to address the lane conditions.

Council awarded the 2023 Road Paving Contract to Terus Construction Ltd., DBA LB Paving, in the amount of $989,776 and falls within the $1 million approved budget.

“I appreciate all the work that was able to be done and it was able to come in under budget,” said Councillor Sam Raven. “I‘d never thought I’d be excited about new roads but I was giddy when I saw this. I’m looking forward to getting some paving happening.”

The roads being done this year have been coordinated with the Development Services Department to ensure there are no conflicts with future infrastructure projects or upcoming repairs.

According to a report from town staff, road sections were identified for rehabilitation and repair and were included in the paving program based on recommendations provided in Tetra Tech’s 2018 Pavement Condition Evaluation report, visual inspection, and public feedback via requests-for-service.

Staff issued a Request for Expressions of Interest to determine the number of paving contractors interested in participating in a competitive tender process for this year’s paving contract.

However, the only contractor to express interest in this year’s paving program was Terus Construction.

Paving will begin by mid-July.
