Charges pending for assault on police officer

Man kicks the legs out from an officer while being lead away in handcuffs.

While under arrest for causing a disturbance, a man earned himself another charge for assaulting a police officer.

Smithers RCMP were conducting an impaired driving investigation after a pull over on 3rd Avenue on Mar. 6.

The driver of the vehicle was detained at the scene but the passengers in the car left to go to a nearby residence.

A male passenger decided to return to the scene shortly afterwards and, according to Sgt. Kirsten Marshall of the RCMP, "tried to intervene in the criminal process."

The intoxicated 25-year-old male was told several times to leave by police yet he continue to yell and swear at officers.

Having had enough, officers decided to arrest the individual for causing a disturbance. That agitated the person even further.

According to the RCMP report on the incident, the man become resistant, trying to punch the officers and then later bit one of them.

One in handcuffs, the troubles didn't end. While being walked to the police vehicle, he kicked the legs out from the officer and knocked both himself and the officer to the ground.

After that he was placed in the police car and taken into custody at the detachment.

Both attending police officers and the suspect male sustained minor injuries as a result of the altercation.

Charges are currently pending against the male, one for assaulting a police officer and another for causing a disturbance.
