Two people were injured after a car slammed into a moose Friday night northwest of Smithers.

Emergency crews rushed to the scene on Hwy. 16 near Powell Frontage Rd. around 10:30 p.m. Friday, and found a vehicle with heavy damage to the front and roof of the car with the moose lying immediately behind the car. The moose, barely alive did not survive.

The driver, a 17-year-old woman and a 19-year-old male passenger were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

One occupant could be seen holding their head as they walked to a waiting ambulance.

Traffic on Hwy 16 was delayed by the crash for about an hour as emergency crews worked the scene.

RCMP are asking drivers to pay extra attention at night as animals are difficult to spot while crossing the road.

Editor’s Note: Smithers RCMP originally identified the 19-year-old male as the driver and the 17-year-old female as the passenger.
