One Nelson police officer has died and another is critically injured after the pair were caught in an avalanche north of Kaslo.

The City of Nelson announced Monday evening that two unidentified officers were in the backcountry when the incident occurred.

Spokespeople with Nelson and Kaslo Search and Rescue who assisted with the rescue effort said the officers had used snowmobiles to access Empire Cabin north of Kaslo, then ski toured to the mountain Jardine SE3 where the avalanche occurred.

Five people staying at the cabin later discovered the officers and alerted Kaslo Search and Rescue. Both officers were then airlifted to BC Ambulance.

The city has said it will make more details public at a press conference shortly before noon.
