The artwork meant to leave a lasting impression on visitors in Smithers airport is being worked on – or at least what should go in and how it will be displayed.

Four recommendations from the Smithers Regional Airport terminal modernization select committee were passed by Smithers council last Tuesday:

– A staff report ordered to recommend the purchase and installation of a Corian wall cover to highlight artwork and protect the wood walls in the airport’s departure lounge;

– A staff report to discuss an art policy, budget, curation, and seeking parameters for the duration and content of public art displayed in the terminal building;

– A staff report on the proposed diorama for the terminal building; and

– A staff report for council to discuss having a sign at the airport that welcomes the public to Wet’suwet’en traditional land.

The departure lounge is expected to be ready in June 2019.

The cost of the expansion and modernization is $8.5 million, with Smithers borrowing $3 million and using airport reserves and grants to cover another $1.5 million.

The federal and provincial governments are contributing $2 million each based on the original $6-million budget from 2016.
