Smithers bodybuilder Jason Cavallin brought home multiple medals from the World Natural Bodybuilding Federation's Calgary competition on Oct. 26, capturing first place in junior men’s bodybuilding and silver in junior men’s physique.
This was Cavallin’s third amateur competition in his two-year bodybuilding career. He also placed fourth in the open men’s lightweight bodybuilding category.
“Winning isn’t all that’s important, but it’s certainly nice," Cavallin said. "What’s important is being there and bringing a better physique than last time, and meeting like-minded people along the way,"
Entering the event feeling “confident and competitive,” Cavallin said the natural focus of the WNBF competition holds special significance for him.
“Natural bodybuilding is becoming a lot more popular. Personally, I don’t want to jeopardize my health and my future for bodybuilding,” he said.
“I also believe you can achieve a very good physique without steroids or other methods... I don’t want to be walking around as some huge mass, just a monster walking down the street.”
The WNBF requires all competitors to pass a polygraph test verifying drug-free status, with overall winners also undergoing urinalysis. Cavallin believes the federation’s commitment to natural bodybuilding is essential, calling it “the most natural federation that we have.”
Looking forward, Cavallin has set his sights on earning a Pro Card within the WNBF, a credential that would allow him to compete professionally.
His family, who attended the event, said they were pleased to see his hard work pay off.
“We are very proud of Jason,” his parents and brother Ryan shared, thanking the WNBF for creating a “great show to watch.”
