Otters host first regional swim meet in two years

Bulkley Valley swimmers log 110 personal best times, 27 gold, 29 silver and 17 bronze finishes

The Smithers Spring Sprint saw 28 Bulkey Valley Otters jump in the pool on March 1 and 2.

It has been a couple of years since the local swim club hosted a regional meet but organizers said it was a success with teams from Terrace and Prince Rupert attending.

"The swim meet was a great success this year," said Coach Amanada deWit.

"With the new timing system in place, everything went smoothly. The club is so thankful for all the volunteers who took time out of their busy schedules to make this happen. From the set up crew to the judges and timers, we are so thankful for everyone's efforts."

She added it is wonderful being able to host a swim meet in Smithers again, giving swimmers who aren't able to travel for meets or don't normally race competitively an opportunity to give it a go.

"We witnessed many smiles this weekend as new swimmers experienced the thrill of racing and we hope to see them at swim meets in the future," she said.

The team was able to try out the new timing system made possible by grants from The Regional District of Bulkley Nechako and the Wetzin'kwa Community Forest Corporation.

There were 110 personal best times crushed by the Otters and 73 podium places including 27 gold, 29 silver and 17 bronze.

"The older athletes really impressed me at this meet," she added. "I think because there's such limited deck space at this aquatic centre the teams are forced to mingle a bit more than usual. The older athletes from all three teams really stepped it up and were inclusive and really supported the younger swimmers. It was really great to see. I love seeing friendships throughout the teams created at events like this. Great team spirit."

There were also four local athletes that qualified for Summer Divsionals in Kelowna.
