Cross-Country Ski Club receives $765K for rejuvenation project

Peter Tweedie honoured; new head coach hired

Many members of the Bulkley Valley Cross-Country Ski Club (BVCCSC) have been busy this fall giving Santa’s elves a run for their money.

One job that kept some members very engaged was grant writing. This is often a fruitless effort, but for BVCCSC, the club got a lucky break this year. They are thrilled to announce they are the successful recipient of funding for the Bulkley Valley Nordic Centre Rejuvenation Project.

The BC Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture and Sport is providing $765,452 from its BC Destination Development Fund. This represents the largest single financial contribution in the ski club’s history and the club is very grateful for the support.

The rejuvenation project will replace aging infrastructure to enhance the BV Nordic Centre’s ability to attract winter tourists and visitors to Smithers. The club hopes improvements in trails and facilities will strengthen its offerings and lead to an increase in the area’s winter tourism and visitation.

The local ski community will benefit as well. Stikine MLA Nathan Cullen noted it means reliable cross-country skiing for kids to seniors throughout the entire season for years and years to come.

The funds will allow the club to purchase a new groomer, one equipped with Nordic ski trail attachments that will replace an aging groomer that is no longer reliable.

As well, funding will facilitate improved trails including the replacement of water crossings on the Pine Creek and Wetzin’kwa trails.

There will also be some subgrade reconstruction and drainage improvements that will allow for more skiable trails in low snow conditions.

Other improvements include a new accessible outhouse at the lower parking lot and new interpretive signage on the trail system.

While the club has been busy looking forward, it took time at its recent Annual General Meeting to recognize Peter Tweedie, awarding him the Chris Dahlie Memorial Cup. This award is given to a member of BVCCSC who promotes skiing by helping to make better facilities, by great personal performance or for leadership in the ski community.

Peter certainly fits that description according to the nominator, who noted how much Peter has contributed to the club and biathlete community over the last 20-plus years.

Peter has been a Jack Rabbits coach, certified coach of biathlon coaching (teaching people to be coaches), BVCCSC board member and biathlon coach (many years as head coach), race volunteer at countless events and a biathlon official at a variety of levels. He also spearheaded the organization of the 2014 BIBC Championships and BIBC Cup at the Nordic Centre.

The above describes his contributions, but equally important, according to the club, is that Peter has always been known for his good cheer and for supporting his fellow competitors.

BVCCSC’s young skiers also got a big boost this summer with the hiring of a new head coach.

Andrea Stapff, formerly of Strathcona Nordic on Vancouver Island has made the move to Smithers.

“Andrea is incredibly humble about her accomplishments and impact on skiers,” states Cross-Country BC’s website. “Andrea truly ‘walks her talk.’ A Canadian Olympic rower herself, she’s been instrumental in coaching athletes of all ages and skills as well as adding strength, depth and collaboration in our local, provincial and national ski communities.”

Smithers skiers are already reaping the benefits of a new coach as they transition from roller skiing to on-snow skiing.

A great deal of programming and outdoor opportunities are available for Smithereens of all ages. Check out the website (bvnordic.ca) for information on how to register for skills improvement, racing, biathlon, masters clinics, and more.

Early bird season’s pass are available for adults ($209) until Nov. 30. Children under eight ski for free.
