The project to expand the gymnastics facility in Smithers is now in Phase 2.
The Northern Edge Sport Association (NESA), formerly known as the Bulkley Valley Gymnastics Association, operates a recreational facility at 1621 Main Street. This property, known as the LB Warner Site, is owned by the Town of Smithers and leased to NESA under a 15-year agreement.
NESA has already rebranded, updated their security system and developed customized digital advertising software. Phase 1 also included schematic 3D architectural renderings and preliminary planning with structural, electrical, mechanical, civil and geotechnical engineers. An asbestos site risk assessment was also completed.
The second phase includes HVAC upgrade and installation, second-level renovation, creation of an additional 700 square foot studio space, community partnership, detailed designs and a site plan update. The total cost for this phase is $390,000.
Future phases include adding 5,000 square feet to the current building footprint, extending it toward Main St.
There are six phases in total, at a cost of approximately $3.5 million.
Recognizing the complexity and interconnectedness of the proposed expansion project, NESA wants to explore a community partnership with the Town of Smithers.
At its Jan. 28 regular meeting, council directed town staff to prepare a follow-up report describing next steps for the Northern Edge Sport Association under the Community Partnership Program.
This policy provides a framework for projects undertaken by community organizations in partnership with the Town, particularly those resulting in infrastructure owned, managed, and maintained by the Town over the long term.
The other part of the project briefly discussed at the meeting was the required off-site work. It is estimated at $359,000 for construction in 2025. These capital works are not in the Town’s Five Year Financial Plan.
