Smithers releases 2025 sidewalk repair plan

Many sections of sidewalks have been slated for replacement with money from Resource Benefits Alliance infrastructure funding

The Town of Smithers has released the list of which sidewalks in Smithers will be fixed this summer.

This year, work begins on Toronto Street between Railway Avenue and First Avenue.

The sidewalk will be replaced using concrete instead of asphalt, with six proposed residential corner let-downs, one crossing let-down. A minor realignment is also required to straighten the route.

Next will be Third Avenue between Queen Street and Columbia Street, as well as, between Manitoba Street and Toronto Street.

Also on the list, upgrades to the local red brick on Fourth Avenue in front of the CIBC bank and in front of the Mountains and Meadows children's boutique.

The sidewalk on Broadway Avenue between Queen Street and St. Joseph's Elementary School is also slated for repairs.

Also scheduled for replacement are the existing sidewalk at 4341 Highway 16 and the sidewalk on Columbia Drive between Pioneer Place and Mountainview Drive

A tiny section of sidewalk on Fulton Avenue will be repaired this summer as well.

A full list with a map can be found on the Town of Smithers' website.

According to the town, this annual program is managed by the Development Services Department and focuses on enhancing pedestrian safety, connectivity, and accessibility across the community.

Each year, the program includes replacing sections of deteriorated sidewalk, constructing new sidewalk segments to fill in gaps in the existing network, and adding accessibility features such as wheelchair ramps and corner letdowns. These improvements are guided by key planning documents, including the Town’s Active Transportation Plan, the Downtown Sidewalk Improvements Policy and the Sidewalk Inspection and Maintenance Policy.

Sidewalks are inspected by town staff on a three-year rotation, with the downtown core inspected annually. Requests for Service submitted by the public are also reviewed and considered when prioritizing sidewalk replacement locations.

As part of the 2025 budget, the Town included an additional $1 million in infrastructure funding from the Resource Benefits Alliance. Of that amount, $300,000 has been allocated specifically to support the sidewalk improvement project.
