The Smithers RCMP are urging parents and guardians to speak with their children about off-road vehicle safety following a rise in complaints about unsafe quad use by youth in the Telkwa area.

According to police, community members have reported young riders operating without helmets and on roadways where they are prohibited. In several instances, riders appeared to be underage, unlicensed, and without any safety equipment.

We are being told by community members that youth are riding dangerously, and we’re deeply concerned that we may end up responding to a preventable tragedy, said Smithers RCMP Acting Sergeant Jim Preston.

These machines are powerful, and without the proper training, gear, or supervision, the risks are very real.

RCMP members will be increasing patrols in and around Telkwa. Media Relations Officer Cst. Jocelyn Foidart said while education remains the priority, officers will issue tickets for infractions under the Off-Road Vehicle Act and Motor Vehicle Act when necessary.

Police said common offences include no insurance; operating without an approved helmet; riding on public roads or highways; allowing a youth to operate unsupervised; and failing to display proper licence plates.

The RCMP also noted that as wildfire season begins, off-road vehicle users are urged to know their responsibilities under British Columbia’s Wildfire Act. All off-road vehicles must have an approved spark arrester installed when operating on forested land during wildfire season.

A spark arrester is a small screen or device fitted into the exhaust system that prevents sparks from exiting the tailpipe, helping reduce the risk of wildfires.

Police encourage residents to report unsafe off-road vehicle use and help spread awareness about the rules. Parents are reminded that off-road vehicles are not toys and carry serious risk when used improperly.

"Together, we can help ensure that young people stay safe and that no family experiences a loss that could have been prevented," said Preston.
