Smithers RCMP have apprehended a repeat property crime offender wanted on 11 outstanding warrants, including charges of theft, break and enter, mischief, and breaches of probation and release orders. The arrest of Amily Tom is part of an ongoing effort to address property crime, which authorities say is a persistent issue impacting the safety and security of the community.

“Property crime offences significantly impact our community, and while we remain committed to holding individuals accountable, the ultimate decision rests with the courts,” said Sergeant Ryan Law of the Smithers RCMP.

Constable Jocelyn Foidart, co-chair of the Smithers Situation Table, highlighted the importance of collaboration in reducing crime rates. “We also recognize that addressing crime requires a collaborative effort, and we remain committed to working with the community and our partner agencies,” she said.

Police are encouraging residents to take proactive steps to help prevent property crime. These include locking doors and windows to secure homes, garages, vehicles, and sheds; keeping valuables, such as tools and electronics, out of sight; and considering the installation of security systems, such as doorbell cameras or surveillance equipment. RCMP also recommend marking and documenting belongings by using tools like engravers to label items and maintaining an inventory with serial numbers and photos. Additionally, they urge residents to report any suspicious activity to the police immediately.

RCMP emphasized that preventive measures, such as securing property and promptly reporting suspicious activity, can support investigations and aid in recovering stolen items. They noted that community involvement plays an important role in addressing property-related offences.
