Smithers man charged with second degree murder

A Smithers man has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder.

The North District RCMP Major Crime Unit arrested Sylvester Gordon Joseph on Sept. 6 related to a homicide in September of 2023.

In the evening hours of Friday, Sept. 8, 2023, Smithers RCMP received a 9-1-1 call reporting a male had been shot in a vehicle outside a residence in Smithers in the 4000 block of Highway 16.

A 44-year-old man was taken to the hospital with serious and life-threatening injuries. He later succumbed to his injuries.

Following a lengthy investigation, the BC Prosecution Service approved a charge of second-degree murder against josepth and a warrant was issued for his arrest.

The North District RCMP Major Crime Unit, along with members of the Smithers RCMP, worked diligently in gathering all evidence and obtaining charge approval in this matter said Staff Sergeant Kris Clark, a spokesperson for the BC RCMP.

Police said the arrest took place without incident in Kelowna on Sept. 6.

Joseph is currently in custody pending a bail hearing on Sept. 11.
