The newly revived Smithers Citizens on Patrol has begun patrolling the streets of Smithers and surrounding areas at night.

However, the group is looking for a few more helping hands.

Currently, they have about 19 volunteers but according to Grant Harris, they'd like to double that.

"The ideal amount to adequately cover all the areas in a town the size of Smithers would be about 40 volunteers," he said.

He added since starting the patrols again, the group has received good feedback from the community.

"So they started in late November," Harris said. "The patrols are random. They are directed to the areas in the community that the RCMP feel need the most attention soonest."

The Citizens on Patrol program is part of a BC-wide network to observe and report suspicious criminal activity.

Harris explained they are about observation not confrontation. Members are trained to spot potentially illegal activity and report it to police.

For people 19+ who are interested, or just want more information, the next meeting will be held on Jan. 21 at the Sunshine Inn or more information can be found by emailing smitherscitizensonpatrol@gmail.com
