The Smithers Art Gallery will have two new exhibits on Aug. 8.

Both exhibits feature themes of nature and human interactions.

Betty Kovacic's exhibit, We Are One, features recycled and repurposed materials throughout her work.

"[Kovacic] is driven to create art that explores her belief that all the world’s inhabitants share a profound, not yet understood, connection with each other and the Earth herself," said Nicole Chernish, gallery manager at the Smithers Art Gallery, in a statement.

The Prince George artist, takes materials, such as copper sheets, and alters its appearance in her creations.

"Using unconventional materials ... [Kovacic's] aim is to reveal unseen narratives of forgotten life forces and unconsidered relationships conveying respect, compassion and unity among all living things," said Chernish.

The second exhibit, Derelict: Waiting in Ruins, features 10 artists from the Northern Artist Adventure Group who spent time in the former mining town, Anyox, which was abandoned in 1935 after it was shut down. It is now known as Canada's largest ghost town.

Although the buildings are still standing, most of the town has been taken back by the land.

"Their collected work is an opportunity to show a landscape that is seen by very few... flooded with layers of light, weather and decay," said Chernish.

"Where there was no life, life is returning in abundance," she added.

The exhibits will run until Aug. 31 and there will be an opening reception on Aug. 9.

Gallery hours are Tuesday to Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
