School District 54 trustees approve modest raise

Per policy, an annual raise linked to the consumer price index is automatic unless trustees vote against it

School District 54 trustees have approved giving themselves a modest pay boost in line with an increase in the Consumer Price Index for B.C.

The increase of 2.5 per cent as of July 1, 2025 follows a policy adopted by the board years ago.

That policy calls for an increase each July 1 based on the Consumer Price Index unless trustees vote against that provision.

At the March school board meeting, five trustees voted in favour and one was opposed. Minutes of board meetings do not traditionally list the names of trustees approving or rejecting motions, but trustee Floyd Krishan proposed the motion and trustee Priscilla Michell seconded.

As of July 1, 2025, the chair (which is currently trustee Jennifer Williams) will be paid $18,198 a year, the vice chair (which is currently trustee Kristina Graham) will be paid $15,167 a year and trustees Krishan, Michell, Jason Krauskopf and Frank Farrell will be paid $13,649.

Information provided by the district indicates School District 54 trustees are the third lowest paid in the province.

Trustees received a four per cent bump last year, one of 6.9 per cent in 2023 and a 2.8 per cent increase in 2022.

In addition to an annual increase provision, trustees are also reimbursed for expenses when on school district business.

Eligible expenses include a per-kilometre flat rate if using their own vehicle, an allowance for meals not otherwise provided at events and hotel room costs if away from home.

Alcohol and gratuities are not regarded as reasonable expenses for reimbursement purposes.
