The Hazelton area will host the Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine’s (RDKS) annual Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Round-Up in 2025, continuing the initiative’s community rotation. The RDKS board has awarded the contract for the event to Clean Harbors Environmental Services at a cost of $31,846, plus disposal fees and applicable taxes.
The HHW Round-Up is intended to provide a safe disposal option for hazardous materials that do not have an accessible waste stream. Since its launch in 2022, the event has rotated throughout the regional district, with previous years seeing large community turnouts. In 2024, it was held in Terrace in partnership with Do Your Part Recycling, with Clean Harbors handling collection.
The 2025 event is tentatively set for June 7, following the long weekend, though discussions with the District of New Hazelton regarding the date are ongoing.
The program has so far removed over 17,000 kilograms of hazardous materials from communities across the district.
The total cost is expected to be approximately $42,000, though actual costs will depend on the volumes and types of hazardous waste collected. Hazeltons' and Stewart Solid Waste Service has allocated $45,000 from its Zero Waste projects budget for 2025 to cover expenses for the round-up.
Due to the relative remoteness of RDKS, few hazardous waste collection services exist. To secure a provider, RDKS issued a request for quote (RFQ) in January, closing on Feb. 10. Three companies submitted proposals, and after a review process, Clean Harbors was selected as the preferred contractor.
