Former Kitimat mayor Paul Monaghan dies

Former mayor Paul Monaghan, Kitimat’s youngest-ever serving mayor, has died.

He passed away Oct. 17 in Vernon, B.C.

Monaghan was elected at the age of 33 in 1974 and served until 1976.

Mayor Phil Germuth issued a statement upon hearing of Monaghan’s passing.

“It is never easy to serve your community, navigating the complexity that comes as an elected official. I respect Paul’s dedication to our community both as a former Kitimat business person and as the community’s mayor, and I offer his family and friends our condolences.”

Born in 1941, in Ottawa, Ontario, Monaghan began his career as a constable with the RCMP, serving from 1959 to 1967, after which he ventured into the business world, opening a tire store in Smithers.

He later he expanded his business to Kitimat, eventually partnering with Kal Tire in the 1980s.
