Construction on what has been dubbed Phase Zero of the Cycle 16 project began this week in Smithers.
On July 29 crews started clearing and prepping for the Cycle16 - Fulton Avenue Connector.
Weather permitting, work on the 1.8km trail will continue into the fall, with a completion target of summer 2025, the town said in a press release.
The Town of Smithers is asking people to stay off that section of the trail until it is complete for their own safety and that of the workers.
The Cycle 16 trail is a 12-kilometre, paved, multi-use trail linking Telkwa and Smithers along Highway 16, with Phase 1 currently done.
The plan is to build a multi-use pathway along the Fulton Ave right-of-way, stretching 1.8km from the Bulkley River bridge to the existing Fulton Ave multi-use pathway.
The estimated cost for the project is $1.7 million. The town was awarded $500,000 from BC Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure’s Active Transportation Infrastructure Grant for the project while the rest will be paid for with the Town’s Northern Capital and Planning Grant Reserve.
