West Horizon Contracting lifted the bridge into place over Dahlie Creek on Nov. 27.

The bridge over Dahlie Creek has been put in as part of the project to connect the Cycle 16 trail to the town of Smithers.

"We are very excited about this major milestone being reached and can't wait for next spring when the trail is paved and ready to open to the public," said Samantha LeBlanc, the town's engagement and communications officer.

"For now, we continue to ask that everyone, please stay clear of the trail area as it is an active work site and the snow may hide hazards."

Construction on the 1.8 km trail began in July 2024. The project has been dubbed Phase Zero of the Cycle 16 project and will run from the bridge down Tatlow Road North to Fulton Avenue.

The Cycle 16 trail is a 12-kilometre, paved, multi-use trail linking Telkwa and Smithers along Highway 16 slated for three phases with Phase 1 currently done.

The Smithers part of the Cycle 16 Project was funded with $500,000 from the 2023 intake of the BC Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure Active Transportation Infrastructure Grant, and the town has also committed $1,650,000 from its share of the Northern Capital and Planning Grant.

Construction on this section is expected to be completed in 2025, with the next step being paving in the spring.
