The Carnaby Street Water looping project to start soon.

Smithers town council has awarded the Carnaby Street Water Looping contract to Terus Construction for $198,702, to make the neighbourhood safer.

A 2008 water system study by Dayton & Knight (now WSP) identified creating a water loop along Carnaby Street was required to eliminate insufficient fire flows in the area, particularly on 19th Avenue.

This water loop will also improve water quality on 19th Avenue by eliminating the dead end water main that currently exists there and add a fire hydrant along Carnaby Street.

This project was approved by council during the 2025 budget process with funds to come from the Utilities Reserve.

The recommended award price is within the approved budget, including a sufficient contingency, staff said.

The project will be completed under a Northern Health permit to ensure that all current legislation and best practices are followed, and no risk is posed to the town’s water distribution system.
