The 2020 Food Bank Christmas Hamper Appeal was the largest amount ever raised in all the years of operating. Publicity Chair Luella Froess expresses her gratitude to all that donated in final report.

The Christmas Hamper Program has begun once again.

The depot, at 940b 4th Avenue in Smithers (next to BV printers, also known as the old U-Brew building) is now open and accepting donations. The Smithers Community Services Association has also started accepting applications for people who want to receive a hamper.

The program has been running for more than 30 years and provides food, the ingredients for a Christmas dinner, toys and books. Each year, around 350 hampers go out, benefiting approximately 1,000 people.

SCSA Executive Director Myung Lee said they have a wish list of the most-needed items.

“Toys for children ages 0-17, non-perishable food items, and boxes are obviously crucial to this project,” she said. “However, people donating their time through volunteering is also a big help and greatly appreciated.”

Applications for a hamper are being accepted at the SCSA’s office on Railway Ave or at the band office in Witset.

The deadline to apply for one is December 8.

Donors can also sponsor a family and can contact the SCSA if they wish to do so.
