Bulkley Emergency Support Services (BESS) helps Smithers residents nearby with disasters and emergencies, such as wildfires.

They are currently recruiting more volunteers.

“[We’re looking for] anyone who is interested in assisting with evacuees, not just for wildfires, but also to respond to calls in our community,” said Matt Herzog, BESS director.

The organization is also on call for house fires and small flooding events.

“We go to anything where people are displaced from their homes in our community or regionally,” he said.

“Our volunteers receive the call the same time the fire department does, to ensure individuals who have been affected are receiving immediate services either through psychological first aid or [anything else] they may require.”

BESS helps residents during the first 72 hours after experiencing a disaster.

This summer, wildfires have been less active in the Bulkley Valley.

“We have not received any requests for support [regarding wildfires] and have not had any major events in our area,” Herzog said.

BESS was on call for the wildfires in Powers Creek and Burns Lake in 2023.

“Last year, we had a busy season and this year we have had a more relaxed summer so far, but that’s not to say things [can't change].”

Herzog says the main reasons for wildfires occurring are due to campfires or by lightning.

“We have had more rain than we’ve expected and haven’t had any dry lightning. The public has been responsible with campfires, following the orders and being respectful of the fire prohibitions,” he said.

“In our valley, we have been lucky.”
