Two men were arrested after police responded to a break-in at a local business last month.
In the early hours of April 12, Smithers RCMP officers were called to the McBike & Sport shop on Main Street following the activation of a glass break and motion alarm. Police arrived and located two men fleeing on foot. Both individuals were arrested nearby, and stolen property was recovered.
"Our officers responded quickly and effectively, which led to the arrest of two individuals and the recovery of stolen property," said Acting Staff Sergeant Ryan Law. "We remain committed to protecting local businesses and responding as swiftly as possible."
Police are recommending charges to Crown counsel in relation to the incident. In Canada, all charges are considered allegations until proven in court.
"We’ve had a number of questions from the public about why someone isn’t immediately charged after an arrest, said Constable Jocelyn Foidart, Smithers RCMP media relations officer. "In British Columbia, police recommend charges, but the decision to approve them lies with Crown counsel."
The investigation into the break-in remains ongoing and names of the individuals will not be released to the public until charges have been approved.
