Organizers have announced a change in date and venue for the upcoming Diwali Party in the Bulkley Valley. Originally set for Telkwa on Oct. 31, the first-ever Diwali celebration in the area will now take place in Smithers at the Pioneer Centre Hall (behind the A&W) on Friday, Nov. 1, from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Mahi Guduru and his friend Sid, who have been instrumental in organizing the event, say they are excited to bring the Festival of Lights to a larger audience in Smithers, where the growing Indian community can come together and share their culture with the broader public.

“This is mainly focused on Indians, but we will be welcoming everyone,” Guduru said.

The event will feature fireworks, traditional Indian food, non-alcoholic drinks, music, dancing, and rangoli competitions with prizes. Organizers hope the event will foster a sense of unity among residents of Smithers and beyond, creating a space where both Indian and non-Indian communities can enjoy the richness of Diwali together.

“We hope this will lead to more events that celebrate diversity and help bring the community closer,” Guduru added.

Diwali, or the Festival of Lights, is a significant cultural and religious event celebrated by the Hindu, Sikh, and Jain communities worldwide. It marks the triumph of light over darkness, and celebrations often include fireworks, oil lamps, colourful rangoli, and feasts. This five-day festival will be highlighted by a range of activities at the Smithers event, showcasing the festive spirit with bright displays and community involvement.

Tickets for the event are priced at $25.
