A new children’s book is set to captivate young readers and their parents at this year’s Kaleidoscope Festival in Smithers. Under-the-Porch Monster, the debut work by Smithers author Luba Kasum, takes readers on an imaginative journey with two sisters who suspect a monster lurks under their porch, only to find a friendly animal instead.

“This story has been brewing for years,” Kasum said. “I first imagined it when my daughters were young, and it’s incredible to finally see it come to life.”

Inspired by her own daughters, the story blends whimsical narrative with educational content, weaving fun scientific facts into its bilingual presentation in Ukrainian and English. The book’s vibrant illustrations, crafted by Ukrainian artist Olena Kyrychenko, add further charm.

Copies will be available for sale, though Kasum cautioned her shipment might not arrive in time for the launch. Festival-goers can still pre-order copies. For each sale, $5 will be donated to charities supporting seniors, orphans, and women in Ukraine affected by the war.

“It’s a cause close to my heart,” said Kasum, who actively supports these initiatives.

Born in Russia and raised in Ukraine, Kasum moved to Smithers in 2016.

The book launch is part of the Smithers Multicultural Society’s Kaleidoscope Festival on Nov. 16 at the Della Herman Theatre. Tickets are $10 in advance at Mountain Eagle Books or $15 at the door. Children aged five and under enter free.

The festival boasts a diverse line-up, including Bollywood Signature from Calgary, PHILCas Filipino dancers from Vancouver, and local performers such as Emma Widen, Kristin Seymor (bagpipes), and Iris Napil, alongside Hawaiian dancers showcasing hula and Polynesian routines. In total, 18 performances are scheduled.

Attendees can also enjoy a craft and dessert market, with free children’s activities such as face painting, a colouring contest, and take-home crafts. Workshops include a Filipino dance session, traditional storytelling and a Bollywood dance workshop.
