Culturally Modified, British Columbia’s first-ever journal of cultural resource management, was recently acknowledged by Canadian Heritage’s Canada Periodical Fund Program with a $5,000 contribution for the launch of its new online publication.

READ Smithers journal a unique cultural resource

Including articles about research in the field of cultural heritage and general-interest pieces about culture, this northwest B.C.-based publication launched in November. It produces new issues quarterly, with the most recent edition released last week at culturallymodified.org.

“While the financial support is appreciated, we’re humbled by the symbolic gesture — that what we’re doing means something, that it’s worthwhile,” Culturally Modified publisher Rick Budhwa said. “We’re proud to be aligned with Canadian Heritage and look forward to continuing Culturally Modified’s work, which seems to be resonating with people.”

Until now, Culturally Modified has been solely funded by Crossroads CRM, a cultural resource management firm based in Smithers. As principal for Crossroads, Budhwa envisioned a publication that would foster discussion about the constantly evolving field of cultural resource management.

“I’ve heard for years from colleagues and the community that we need a platform to address the rapid changes taking place in cultural resource management. Culturally Modified was a response to that need and the way it’s been received tells me we’ve hit the mark,” he says.

The contribution for Culturally Modified comes from the Canada Periodical Fund’s Business Innovation component, which offers support to small and mid-sized printed magazine and digital periodical publishers.

Culturally Modified publishes four times a year at culturallymodified.org. The next edition is expected in April.
