A younger, slightly taller version of the Alpenhorn Man is being installed to greet visitors turning onto Main Street and will have a ribbon cutting Oct. 3 at 11:30 a.m.
The statue created by JJ’s Woodart is an initiative of the Smithers District Chamber of Commerce, which stepped up after the Town revealed Alpine Al's bones were cracking. Moisture inside expanding and contracting over the seasons meant major repairs were needed to the statue which has been an icon since the '70s.
While Al the second is getting his moment in the sun, the plan is for Al the first to find a new home under some shade and protection from the elements near the Visitors Centre across the highway.
