There is an exciting new program being offered to all the schools in the Northwest this spring called Up Your Watershed.
Created and put on by the Artist Response Team (ART) from the Lower Mainland, this amazing program teaches children and youth of all ages about watershed stewardship, salmon conservation and how actions such as recycling can help the environment.
Schools, music programs and teachers can sign their classes up and ART will send out rehearsal CDs and educator’s handbooks as soon as the group is confirmed. Participants will learn two feature songs and two mass songs about the watersheds and sustainability and then in May ART will come up for the two-day program. Day one they will meet with each group to rehearse the songs and then on day two there will be a concert for the community, ART member Holly Arntzen said.
“Students are also asked to write a brief paragraph on what the songs mean to them and what they think people can do to help. Some of these will be read out loud at the concert,” Arntzen explained.
Thanks to the donations of the Skeena Watershed Conservation Coalition and Encorp Pacific, there is no cost to the teachers or schools. There will be a small fee to attend the concert to help cover the costs.
