Matilda Wilson thought she was hosting a birthday party for her beau Doug Pete. Little did she know it was also her engagement party.
Family and friends witnessed the romantic moment at the Friendship Centre in Smithers Friday night. It was Doug’s 60th birthday, and Matilda had her baked goods filling the crowd through cake walks (musical chairs – but there’s cake!) and as a popcorn replacement while Doug tore up the dance floor.
She never saw it coming.
As she told everyone, Doug “played it really cool” up to the big moment. The Doug walked in with a bouquet of peach roses, her favourite.
“Was is he up to?” she asked.
Sitting in front of her loved ones, Matilda watched Doug pick up the mic.
“This has been the best six years of my life. But for her, I didn’t know what was going to happen to me,” said Doug.
Then he got down on one knee.
“Would you make me the happiest man in the universe, and marry me?”
Matilda was in tears.
“Oh my baby; oh sweetheart! Yes I will marry you.”
Matilda spoke of the hard times she and her family have gone through, losing loved ones.
“You love my family so much; and you always make them laugh, even at hard times you do that,” she said.
Louis, Timothy and Ramona could not be there physically, but Matilda and her family made sure to speak of them so that they were there in spirit.
