The Hazelton Spartans Senior girls basketball team hosted a play day last Saturday but went 0-2 after taking on one of the top provincial contenders.

Teacher sponsor Mary Charlebois said it was not hard to see why Houston Christian is one of the top teams.

“Houston Christian looks to be a very strong team this year and are definitely top contenders for the Provincial’s next month,” she said. “It was also really nice to see Prince Rupert here this weekend as weather has really been a factor in this year’s season with the poor road conditions.”

The Spartans lost their first game to Bulkley Valley Christian 53-31in the morning and then fell 58-43 to Houston in the afternoon. The other two games that day were BVCS who defeated Prince Rupert Rainmakers 65-57 and Houston took down the Rainmakers who had a short bench, 76-41. While the Spartans lost both their games the day was a great success overall Charlebois said.

“It was a great play day and lots of fun with a really good concession stand too,” she said. “The coach, Brandi Nash, was very pleased with the team’s efforts.”

The Senior girls will be traveling to Smithers this weekend for a final play day before the zones at the end of the month.
