Sacred Headwaters Gathering this weekend

This weekend there is the 6th Annual Sacred Headwaters Gathering.

The Skeena Watershed Conservation Coalition has been making a difference in northern communities for the past few years in many ways including bringing exciting projects to the communities such as the recent Up Your Watershed or the 10,000 Salmon project that is now decorating the shores of Cow Bay in Prince Rupert.

Their message and mission has been complex over the years yet straight forward: keep Shell out of the pristine Sacred Headwaters. Northern B.C.’s Sacred Headwaters is a rare and special place. In a vast alpine basin, three of the Northwest’s greatest salmon rivers come to life, the Skeena, the Nass and the Stikine. Stone sheep, caribou, grizzly bears and wolves call the Headwaters home, and the area is critically important to the local indigenous people, the Tahltan.

Their battle to keep development out of the area is now well known and documented and this weekend there is the 6th Annual Sacred Headwaters Gathering to celebrate their journey and mission. The three day music event takes place in Iskut and everyone is encouraged to come out and join in the festivities. This year people can also get on board for a half day river rafting tour of the Headwaters but those interested must contact the SWCC office this week.

In addition to a great rafting adventure and music there will be food, a variety of other entertainment, games and much more.

For more information contact the SWCC at 250-842-2494.
