Topley Landing, Mill Bay Road, and the Village of Granisle will be connected to the world via high speed internet soon thanks to funding from the province.

The cost to bring high speed internet to the rural region cost $100,000 and was part of a $2.34 million announcement made late last week that will see 51 communities throughout B.C. connected to high speed.

“Bringing Internet across to our most rural areas is crucial for the future of our young people and their education, for the health of families and for the competitiveness of our businesses,” Premier Christy Clark stated in a media release. “Not only does it help give British Columbians better access to information and opportunity, but it also brings that information closer and faster to our youngest learners.”

Since 2000, the province has provided $6.83 million to hook up 210 communities to high speed. Today, they report, 93 per cent of B.C. citizens have access to high speed internet. This investment is the largest made in one year, reports Minister of Labour, Citizens’ Services and Open Government Stephanie Cadieux.

“By investing in 51 new projects, we will help bring health and education opportunities, local business development and job creation and training to thousands of people living in B.C.’s smallest communities,” Cadieux said.

The projects are slated to be completed by March 2012.
