When the moose begin checking in to the Northern Lights Wildlife Society shelter in Smithers next season, they’ll be treated to roomier accommodation.

That’s thanks to a donation from Central 1 Credit Union which used social networking site Facebook to distribute $100,000 of funds to charities.

Northern Lights benefited from $5,150, to go towards moose pens.

“We’re going to use it to enlarge the pen because we’re getting more and more moose in,” said Angelika Langen.

She said it was important to build up capacity for moose because they’re usually forgotten in donations. Many people, she said, will give money to go towards the bears they house, but not for moose.

Their moose population has also been growing. She said the most they’ve had at a time is eight. She attributes the growth to a growing awareness of her organization and the work they do.

Meanwhile, they came in eight place in the Pepsi Refresh Project. With public voting, they were aiming for the top two spots, which would have earned them $25,000 to return grizzly bears back to the wild.
