Maitland rewarded for dedication

Long time mayor of Hazelton Alice Maitland was recognized last week for her dedication to the people of the north and her home town when she was among 36 British Columbian’s to received the BC Community Achievement Award at the Government house in Victoria last Wednesday.

The award was presented by the Honourable Kevin Falcon, Deputy Premier of British Columbia and his the Honourable Steven Point, OBC, Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia.

They introduced Maitland by saying she “has been called every local government elected title; commissioner alderman, alderwoman, councillor, trustee, director and mayor,” according to a press release.

With more than 40 years of public service and a record unsurpassed by many in B.C. municipal and regional politics, she has been a large part of shaping and developing Hazelton and keeping the diverse pioneer history, First Nation’s culture and unique community feel they explained.

In addition, Maitland has also been a big part of the Northwest Community College and adult education for more than 26 years.

However, in closing, before presenting her with her award they made known how lucky the people of the north are to have had Maitland as such a key member of the community.

“All those who live in B.C.’s northern rural communities owe a debt of gratitude to Alice for her selfless contributions to building a better place for all.”
