Enjoy a sweet time at cake demo

Cake decorator and T.V. celebrity Greggy Soriano will make his Canadian debut right here in Smithers.

Soriano was invited to Smithers to host the My Faboo Sweet 16 Cake demo next Tuesday at the Dze L K’ant Friendship Centre. Annette Morgan, the executive director for the centre, has been planning the event for just over three months now.

As Cake Boss is one of her favourite shows, she really enjoyed it when Soriano was a contestant on the show and decided to see if he’d be interested in coming up to Smithers to host a how-to event.

“I am sure attendees will have a lot of laughs,” Morgan said.

Soriano will be demonstrating how to make a Sweet 16 cake look fabulous — as he did on Next Great Baker — but it can be much more broad spectrum than that, he said.

Cake decorating and designing has always been a part of who he is, Soriano said.  Even as a little boy he would arrange the toothpaste “just so” on the toothbrush, and officially started decorating cakes at the age of 15, when he took lessons at a cake decorating supply store in his hometown of Los Angeles, California.

The class was full of older women, and he fell in love that day, Soriano said, not only making friends, but a life-long career decision.

“I live, eat, breathe, and sleep cake decorating and design and I love-love-love it,” Soriano wrote to The Interior News.

Since then, it’s just taken off, he said, who’s appeared on TLC’s Cake Boss: Next Great Baker. With a background in performing arts, he’s always loved putting on a show and it’s been great creating something he’s truly passionate and entertaining viewers at home, and he’s just thrilled to debut up in Canada in Smithers.

“I’m ... excited to go to Smithers!,” he exclaimed.

“I want everyone to leave inspired and wanting to go home and make any kind of cake they can dream of,” he writes. “I will show them easy and fun tips and tricks on making something look like it was done by a pro.”

Tickets are $40 per person and are available from the Dze L K’ant Friendship Centre. The Sweet 16 event takes place on March 22 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.
