Cold start

The frigid temperatures didn't stop about 20 people from jumping into a frozen Lake Kathlyn to ring in the new year on Jan 1

Frigid temperatures didn't stop about 20 Bulkley Valley brave souls from jumping into a frozen lake to ring in the new year on Jan. 1.

Organizer Leandra Wiebe said she has been enjoying getting into the cold water lately.

"This is actually day 93 for me, consecutive cold plunges. It's really helped my mental health, and I wanted to share it with everyone," she said. "The first two minutes are painful, I'm not gonna lie. But after that, pure bliss."

Last year the event was held at Seymour Lake but Northern Health has issued a Do Not Use order for Seymour due to a cyanobacteria bloom. The blue-green algae in the bloom produce toxins that can make people and pets sick if they come into contact with the water.

This year, people jumped into Lake Kathlyn through a hole cut into the ice.
