Coffee house fundraiser a success

The Savannah Jones Memorial School fundraiser coffee house last week was a huge success, according to creator and organizer Tiffany Bennet.

“Things went amazingly well, it was perfect,” she said. “I don’t think it could have gone any better as there were lots of people who helped out at the concession, so many people brought in great baked goods, the music was amazing, the decorations were great, attendance was spectacular, people were very generous and everyone had a really good time.”

The night raised $1,854 which brought their grand total to $5,600 to date.

Previous fundraising included a coin drive and the Christmas in Hazelton booth where Bennet sold baked goods, candles, Christmas decorations and gifts that were donated. They also have a special blend of coffee for sale at Mercedes called Social Justice which proceeds go to the fundraiser.

In addition to the recent successful coffee house, Bennet said she just found out that Calderwood Realty is donating $1,000 which will bring her very close to the half way mark. The goal is to reach $15,000 and build a school in a third world country in the next few years which Bennet will name the Savannah Jones Memorial School and she added she is now confident she will make her dream a reality.

“For the amount of fundraising we have done, it is overwhelming how supportive everyone is,” she explained. “You really appreciate your community and ours is so special and that is demonstrated in situations like this.”

In addition to the coffee house event, Geoff Watling recorded a CD of the evening. Teacher Barb Janze explained that there will be another Coffee house fundraiser to showcase more HSS talent on May 26 which they will also record for the CD and the two will be combined to create a great piece of local music for people to purchase. Proceeds will also go to the Memorial fund.

The next event on the calendar for Bennet will be a table at the Spring Fling in Old Hazelton on April 24 and she also plans on having a dessert auction sometime in the future.
