The Smithers Christmas Bird Count will be held on Friday December 27, 2024 from dawn to dusk (with optional owling after dark).
If people would like to participate, they must register. By registering, volunteers can choose the area in which they prefer to count or be assigned to an area that is not already being covered.
In addition, beginners can be placed with a group of more experienced birders. If you wish to join another group, let the organizers know.
Counts must be made inside the count circle to be valid (i.e. included in the results). The count must take place with the 24 km (15 mile) diameter circle centred around the Central Park Building at Main Street and Hwy 16 in Smithers. To find the count circle map, go to Audubon Christmas Bird Count, type in BCSM, and scroll down to find the link to ‘map’.
The count needs more field counters and feeder watchers.
Please register by email to rpojar@gmail.com or by calling 250-847-9429 by December 22, 2024
The count is one of hundreds that take place across Canada, the U.S., Central America, and parts of South America. It is always lots of fun, especially as people try to outdo each other by finding the most unusual species of the day.
People unable to get out are encouraged to watch their bird feeders, but please let us know where your feeder is located so that we do not count it twice.
It is extremely important that registrants fill in the forms completely and email them to the coordinator at the above email address as soon as they can after the count. You will receive count forms once you register to participate.
Thanks, on behalf of the Bulkley Valley Naturalists.
